The Nine Arches Bridge

The Nine Arches Bridge also called the Bridge in the Sky, is a viaduct bridge in Sri Lanka. It is one of the best examples of colonial-era railway construction in the country. The construction of the bridge is generally attributed to a local Ceylonese builder, P. K. Appuhami, in consultation with British engineers.

ආරුක්කු නවය පාලම ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ පාලමකි. එය මෙරට යටත් විජිත යුගයේ දුම්රිය ඉදිකිරීමේ හොඳම උදාහරණයකි. පාලම ඉදිකිරීම සාමාන්‍යයෙන් ආරෝපණය කර ඇත්තේ බ්‍රිතාන්‍ය ඉංජිනේරුවන්ගේ උපදෙස් මත දේශීය ලංකා ඉදිකිරීම්කරුවෙකු වන P. K. අප්පුහාමි විසිනි.

Чтобы добраться до этого моста мы шли по работающим железнодорожным путям 2 км , но самое страшное было в туннеле , ведь находясь в поезде я видела , как стены туннеля оказывались близко к моему лицу , бежала и представляла , как откуда не возьмись он выезжает и ослепляет меня своими пышущими кровожадностью фарами 🤣  Сейчас это смешно вспомнить , но я бежала, что есть сил и кричала «Женя , быстрее, быстрее !!!!» Не смотря под ноги, практически в полной тьме…  Не подумайте , как оказалось есть и более безопасные маршруты , но я не ищу лёгких путей 🤣  Чтобы добраться до моста , нужно доехать на поезде до Эллы( из Канди или из Нувара Элии) , далее добраться до деревни Готувала . Мост есть на карте , геометку оставила в посте.  Добраться можно : пешком прямо по путям 2 км 3 км по дороге Можно взять тук тук или байк и доехать до участка дороги с поворотом на мост , все водители знают , где он, дальше пешком .  Есть экскурсии , гиды . Но по моему, это лишнее , итак все можно найти и все понятно.  Девятиарочный мост на Шри-Ланке построили британские колонизаторы в 1921 году . Во время строительства не использовались металл и бетон — только камни и кирпичи. На тот момент шриланкийцы считали его настоящим чудом инженерии. С тех пор мост ни разу не реставрировали — он сохранил свое очарование в первозданном виде и все еще функционирует. По нему проезжают все поезда, идущие в Бадуллу.

To get to this bridge, we walked along the working railway tracks for 2 km, but the worst thing was in the tunnel, because while on the train I saw how the walls of the tunnel were close to my face, ran and imagined how out of nowhere it leaves and blinds me with my bloodthirsty headlights 🤣 Now it’s funny to remember, but I ran with all my strength and shouted “Zhenya, faster, faster !!!!” Without looking under your feet, almost in complete darkness... Don't think, as it turned out, there are safer routes, but I'm not looking for easy ways 🤣 To get to the bridge, you need to take a train to Ella (from Kandy or from Nuwara Eliya), then get to the village of Gotuvala. The bridge is on the map, I left the geotag in the post. You can get there: on foot straight along the tracks 2 km 3 km along the road You can take a tuk tuk or a bike and get to the section of the road with a turn to the bridge, all drivers know where it is, then on foot. There are excursions and guides. But in my opinion, this is superfluous, so everything can be found and everything is clear. The nine-arch bridge in Sri Lanka was built by the British colonialists in 1921. During the construction, no metal and concrete were used - only stones and bricks. At that time, the Sri Lankans considered him a real miracle of engineering. Since then, the bridge has never been restored - it has retained its charm in its original form and is still functioning. All trains going to Badulla pass through it.
